How does Teeth Whitening Work?

Teeth whitening is the dental technique of applying a whitening agent or dental bleach to the surface of a tooth – this can be in the form of a ‘professional whitening gel’ which is activated by a rapid whitening system using a powerful light.

The tooth bleach is held against the tooth in the form of a gel, for all of these teeth whitening options in our dental practice we use either carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide in low concentrations.

In each case, your teeth are gently whitened and dark stains removed as the bleach reacts with the tooth surface to create tiny oxygen bubbles, this then gently removes the tooth stains and the bleaching gel or mouth wash then whitens your teeth over a period of a few days. Find out more.

Having whiter teeth increases confidence. This is a known fact.

After your teeth have been whitened there is a natural tendency for the teeth to slowly darken again, this is normal and to be expected – however it is unlikely that they will ever return to their original shade.

Teeth whitening should always be viewed as a treatment that needs top ups over a period of time.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

So long as teeth whitening is undertaken by a dental health professional then yes, teeth whitening is safe. Teeth whitening only becomes unsafe when the bleaching gel is allowed to come into contact with the delicate gum area.

A dental professional is able to control the application of the bleaching gel by using precision made bleaching trays, these trays fit precisely around your tooth/gum margin to ensure that the bleaching agent stays on your tooth and does not come into contact with your gum. If the bleaching gel is allowed to contact your gum then this can burn and cause severe irritation.

A dental professional will also have full cross infection control procedures in place. Many non-dental teeth whitening spas do not use adequate cross infection control, this means you could end up leaving your non-dental whitening appointment with more than just whiter teeth!

The General Dental Council review the process of teeth whitening as ‘dentistry’, anyone undertaking dentistry without being a suitably qualified and registered dental professional may be taken to court and prosecuted.
